Schaft Creek is a remote 85-person seasonal camp, only accessible by air and located within Tahltan Territory in BC’s Golden Triangle mining district. The Tahltan Nation is the largest Indigenous territory in BC covering 13% of the province. Schaft Creek is one of the largest undeveloped porphyry copper deposits in North America. The renewable power system will be owned by the Tahltan Nation Development Corporation and leased to Teck. The power system is expected to offset over 80% of the camp diesel power during its April to October operating season, equivalent to over 250 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. This also means less diesel is flown into the site each season. Solvest provided about 25% of the funding for the project, co-investing with TNDC. This is the largest heli-portable renewable power system in Canada.
Location: Schaft Creek Copper Project, British Columbia
System Size: 2 x Heli-portable 53 kW DC Solar + 100 kWh Battery
